Good day to all IEM (Southern Branch) members,
Referring to the subject above, kindly find enclosed the flyer on the upcoming event:
One Day Course on “Slope Engineering – Analysis, Monitoring and Remediation of Failed Slope”
Date     :  Saturday, 16th December 2017
Time     :  9.00 a.m to 5.30 p.m
Venue   :  The Grand Paragon Hotel, Johor Bahru.
Speaker:  Er. Prof. Dr. Chew Soon Hoe

BEM approved CPD/PDP hours: 8.0
Ref. No. IEM17/SB/503/C
Slope failures regardless at a small or large scale, is occurring more often than expected, especially in tropical countries where rainfall intensity is high and unpredictable. Without proper geotechnical analysis and preventive measures, there are even higher risks of slope failure at hillside developments when due to deforestation. This day course will highlight the potential failure mechanisms, the effect of partially saturated soil and rainfall on slope stability, the method of analysis of slope stability, the instrumentation for slope monitoring, methods for protecting the slope, and repairing of failed slope.
Biodata Speaker
Er. Prof. Dr. Chew Soon Hoe graduated with PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, USA. He is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Civil Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Protective technology (CPT), jointly established by the Defence Ministry and NUS.
He is actively involved in research and consultancy work relating to various applications of Geosynthetics, slope repair and erosion control, excavation related problem, ground improvement using jet grouting and deep cement mixing, arresting ground settlement in Singapore and this region, specialised pile testing. He is also an expert in numerical modeling in geotechnical engineering and geo-environmental engineering. He is also involved in research and teaching of engineering geology, earthquake and tsunamis related topics.

He has published very widely on his research and practical involvement on real life projects. He was invited as a keynote speaker and special lecture speaker in a number of international and regional conferences. He is one of the key founding members in developing the training course for Erosion and Sedimentation Control for Construction Sites in Singapore, under the joint collaboration of IES, ACES and PUB.
He was elected as a council member of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore, IES, 2006-2008 and 2009-2011. He is currently the President of Southeast Asia Chapter of International Geosynthetics Society.
